Position Description
The certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice nurse who is responsible for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum, and newborn patients. The CNM performs physical exams, collects and documents data, manages labor and spontaneous delivery, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide direct clinical services and management of mothers and babies as defined in the standing orders, policies, procedures and protocols for the certified nurse midwife.
- Obtain patient health histories and complete physical examinations.
- Document findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings.
- Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests.
- Explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patient, family, staff, and healthcare learners.
- Perform approved therapeutic procedures based upon patient’s clinical status.
- Document patient preparation and response to procedure(s).
- Formulate and implement prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and interconceptional care as defined by the nurse midwifery service.
- Collaborate with physician and nursing colleagues and document in medical records and appropriate narrative summaries.
- Utilize prescriptive privileges as allowed by the Georgia Composite Medical Board.
- Provide patient and family education related to prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and interconceptional care.
- Perform and participate in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.

Position Requirements
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AN ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED
- MSN Required
- 3 years of nursing experience
- Must have current or unrestricted licensure in the state of Georgia as an advanced practice nurse. Current certification by the American College of Nurse Midwives.
- Knowledge of professional nursing theory, clinical practice standards, normal maternal / fetal growth and development, and requirements of nurse midwifery practice.
- Able to independently seek out resources and solve complex problems.
- Able to communicate effectively with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
- Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up.
- Able to use fine motor skills.
- Able to record activities, document assessments & interventions; prepare reports and presentations.
- Able to use computer and learn new software programs.
- Able to provide leadership in clinical area of expertise and in meeting organizational goals
- Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds.
- Able to remain focused and organized
- Provide night-time/weekend call as required.
- Provide weekend rounding support as required.

- Current and unrestricted licensure in the State of Georgia.
